After the holidays, many public health professionals return to work feeling depleted, scattered, and pressured to “get back on track.” They continue to make meaningful contributions in their communities while carrying heavy workloads, public responsibility, and personal stress. Drivers, Detours, and Destinations reframes goal setting as a reset rather than a restart, acknowledging that progress is rarely linear and that detours are part of the journey.
Grounded in recovery-informed practice and neuroscience, this webinar introduces a strength-based, brain-informed approach to goal setting that honors burnout, setbacks, and real-world constraints. Participants will explore why traditional goal-setting often fails under stress, how capacity and follow-through are impacted by burnout, and how to create small, sustainable actions that build momentum over time. If you slip, you don’t stop—you recalibrate, reset, and keep moving forward.
Lamarr Lewis, MA, LAPC, CPRP, is a dedicated public servant, mental wellness advocate, published author, and change agent. As a community-based practitioner, he has worked with such diverse groups as; individuals living with psychiatric disabilities, people in recovery, At-Hope (He does not use the term At-Risk) youth, and more. He tirelessly gives back to his community through homeless outreach initiatives, public speaking, mentoring, coaching, and finding ways to develop the next generation of leaders. He is an alumnus of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and received his master’s degree from Argosy University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He is currently a mental health therapist, trainer, and consultant. His lifelong mission is to leave the world better than when he found it.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least two to three personal strengths and past successes that can be leveraged to support realistic goal setting during periods of stress or transition.
- Differentiate between deficit, avoidance-based goals and strength-based approach goals.
- Reframe at least one current goal using a recovery-informed lens.
- Develop one short-term, strength-based action plan that incorporates flexibility, self-compassion, and neuroscience-informed habit principles.
